Driving Sustainable Rice Adoption

The Sustainable Rice Platform recently supported a multi-stakeholder consultation in New Delhi aimed at accelerating the adoption of sustainable rice farming in Uttar Pradesh. The dialogue brought together government representatives, researchers, and private sector actors to explore practical incentive models that can support smallholder farmers in adopting more sustainable practices.

A key focus was the scaling of Direct Seeded Rice (DSR), which has already expanded to around 100,000 hectares in the state through collaborative efforts across the public and private sectors. Participants discussed how targeted incentives, including upfront payments, performance-based rewards, and price premiums—could help farmers adopt improved practices while managing production risks.

The consultation also highlighted important challenges, including access to machinery, technical knowledge gaps, and barriers faced by smallholder farmers in meeting certification requirements. At the same time, emerging opportunities such as carbon markets and digital monitoring tools were identified as potential pathways to strengthen incentives and improve transparency.

SRP continues to play a crucial part in fostering cooperation and identifying scalable solutions to promote sustainable rice agriculture by bringing together relevant stakeholders along the rice value chain.
